Vancouver's own Sister Tehsina Devji has created an inspiring short documentary on womens' Hijab:

Says the film's introduction, "'Hijab: Unveiling the Truth' is an attempt to shatter the stereotypes and reveal the truth about the hijab (Islamic veil). On a broader scope, the film addresses the issue of diversity." And it couldn't come at a more opportune time. A simple search on Google News for stories on hijab and the Muslim veil yields over 2,000 results on any given day, each piece covering its own angle on what is increasingly becoming a political and social, rather than spiritual, issue. From the infamous French ban on religious symbols to banishing young Muslim girls from the soccer pitch here in Canada, and now in Scotland too, all at a time when including young women in healthy, normal activities seems to be the order of the day, the present social landscape couldn't be more conflicted when it comes to such a simple garment.

Sister Tehsina's initiative adds a bright spark of intelligent light to that debate. As part of CBC's EXPOSURE, an innovative program that allows a broad-based user community to submit video content via the Internet, this documentary could find its way into living rooms around Canada.
